Christian Love and...Rocky? Part Six

A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. 
                                                                                                             - Proverbs 31:10-11

She worked at a pet store and happened to be the sister of his best friend. Even though she was very shy there was something about her that attracted Rocky Balboa. He pursued her gently and eventually won her heart. Eventually they would marry and have a son and she would be there with him to celebrate all of his glorious moments as well as his greatest struggles. Adrian Balboa loved Rocky without question even when it wasn't always the easiest things for her to do.

That was until he lost her to ovarian cancer.  At the beginning of the sixth film we see him sitting at Adrian's grave and looking totally lost. Rocky is devastated because Adrian was his everything.

Later that night he takes a tour with his brother in law Paulie as he visits the sights throughout the city where he and Adrian spent their first date Each location represent a special moment that helped Rocky and Adrian begin their life together. The most poignant of all was when he remembered inviting her into his apartment and how all he wanted was for her to trust him, which she did. In other words, he wanted Adrian to know that she was good to him, which is why he had no intention of hurting her.

The loss of Adrian leaves a permanent void in his life. While the film doesn't take the time to suggest that Rocky would find true fulfillment in the divine it does remind him that he is still alive and that his life still has a purpose because of the fact that he is still good. One of the purposes we all have is to love our neighbor (Matthew 22:39) and this does not change even when we lose our spouse. We are still people and we as well as others were made to be loved 

During the film Rocky reunites with an old friend he calls Lil' Marie, who is also someone he tried to mentor in their younger days. Once they reunite he begins the process of offering whatever help he can both to her and her son, even to the point of questioning who made her question her own worth as a person.

Rocky would also start to think about doing something that always made him feel alive, which was boxing. While some see boxing as nothing more than a dangerous sport Rocky knew that it was more than that as it taught him so many lessons that applied to all of life. In fact, Adrian was a big supporter of her husband's boxing career once she had a better understanding of what it meant to him due to the fact that it helped make him into the man that he was. Thankfully for Rocky he had Marie to remind him that he had to do what made him happy regardless of how it looked to others.  

Fighters Fight

The first person to oppose the idea of Rocky fighting again was Paulie. Now that Adrian was gone Rocky struggled to find a purpose in life. He was obviously retired and spent many of those years with Adrian as they opened a restaurant that he continued to operate after her death. That did not mean that he did not miss the thing that burned inside of him. Rocky makes it clear to Paulie that he's not interested in doing anything really big or in trying to become a champion. He simply wants to compete because he recalls the purpose that it gave him. Perhaps that's what he meant when he said that there was still stuff in the basement or perhaps boxing will be the activity that will help him release the anger he was still feeling over the loss of Adrian. In some ways Rocky isn't clear but we certainly can see that he is looking for something to live for again. 

The Beast Inside

Of course just like in relationships there are those who question one's motives or desires when they decide to pursue something or someone. We remember in the first film when even Paulie questioned why Rocky would want to go out with his sister Adrian, going as far as calling her as a loser. In some ways it's no different than Rocky's son Robert asking him why he would want to box again due to the fact that people had already started to mock Rocky for his decision to fight again as well as the impact it would have on him being his son. To Robert's surprise, Rocky not only has a good answer for his son but also some harsh criticisms for his son, while also reminding him that he still loves him.

Of course Robert's concern was due to the press conference that was held earlier in the day when members of the press ridiculed Rocky for being an old and washed up boxer that had no business being in the ring with the current heavyweight champion Mason Dixon. With Dixon also laughing at Rocky when questioned about the possibility of getting hurt in a fight that was seen by many as a publicity stunt, Rocky was the source public ridicule  No one saw any good in him!

Sadly, the fact that Rocky had a boxing license should have told everyone that he was capable of at least competing. It's too bad the members of the press were not in attendance when Rocky's enthusiasm rather than his positive test results was the final bit of information that convinced the boxing commission to award him a license. His desire to fight was based on his determination to live his life being able to do the thing that made him feel alive.

What is it about boxing that could teach so many of us about what it means to both compete and to persevere? The key to understanding this was when Dixon's trainer Martin spoke to him about the need to be tested. Here we see the idea of going through a great suffering in order to experience a great ecstasy, just like when a woman gives birth (see John 16:21). This is something that many of us can experience in life in order to see how good we really are because as Martin said, it leads to self-respect Rocky's experience as a boxer also allowed him to understand that, which he imparted to his own son. This is a lesson that applies to so many aspects of our lives. 

                                                      But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.

Baptism Under Fire

This is why the boxing match at the end of the movie is the most beautiful match in the history of the Rocky franchise. It's not about winning and losing as much as it is about testing oneself. Rocky is there simply for the love of the sport, for the competition. Dixon is there to be tested by an opponent that won't quit since he had never faced a boxer with Rocky's experience and determination.

Rocky is the first to have to dig down as he is clearly over matched by Dixon's youth and boxing skills. After a couple of knock downs and awkward misses Rocky eventually figures out how to get to Dixon. Once this happens Dixon feels a type of pressure that he had never felt before. Aside from that, he also has to deal with a broken hand and then a knockdown, which certainly gave Rocky a huge psychological advantage.

As the fight goes on the two warriors battle each other without pause. Then in the final round Rocky is dropped by Dixon one last time and we can see that he is about to quit. That is when he looks at his son Robert and reminds himself that he needs to teach his son by example as he is now beyond words. He will teach his son through the thing that he knows best. 

The Last Round

No one would have criticized Rocky for staying down because they had already seen the effort he had put into the match. Fans also knew what Rocky had been through and accomplished in his previous bouts so he had nothing more to prove to anyone. Still, he was willing to experience the agony in order to feel the ecstasy, which in this case would be to demonstrate to his son how winning is done. It was a true form of sacrificial love (agape).

The nice thing about this scene being done in the context of a film are the visuals what show us all that Rocky was actually thinking. In this case he wasn't just knocked down in a boxing match because in his mind he was reviewing some of the toughest moments from his life. That means that he got to see how life also knocked him down with the worst thing being the death of Adrian. So, as he gets up to finish the match we also see him getting up to live his life to the fullest knowing that he has so much more to accomplish. Now we see more than ever why it was important for him to have this match because perhaps this was the only thing that could really remind him that he was good.

The bell rings while the two boxers were in the middle of the ring duking it out. Once the fight is over they embrace and it is there that Rocky tells Dixon that he is a great champion. The smile on Dixon's face says it all because he received such praise from a two time champion who defeated some of the greatest heavyweight boxers in history. This was the self-respect Dixon really wanted and the encouragement he received from Martin after the fight further revealed to him that he was in fact the champion that he hoped to be. He was indeed tested in the ring that night and he prove to himself and to the whole world that he had the heart to deal with the baptism of fire that Martin had referred to earlier in the film.

In the end we see that Rocky and Dixon in fact needed each other in order to show themselves as well as the world around them that they were in fact great warriors. This is where we can be indebted to our opponent as they give us the opportunity to test ourselves in order to see how great we can truly be. In doing so we acknowledge to our opponent that they are good and they in turn do the same to us because our efforts tested them in the same way.

Finally, we have the ending scene where Rocky goes to Adrian's grave to offer flowers and to let her know that once again, they did it. In other words, she is still in his heart but now we see a look on his face that we didn't see at the beginning of the film. Yes, he misses her but we can see as he walks away from her grave that he has more life to live. In the past it was Adrian that reminded him that he was good but now it was his other love, which was boxing, that reminded him that he was more than a man who lost his wife. We can't give what we don't have so the best way to show people they are good is to remind ourselves that we are also good. If there is one lesson we can learn from the love that was shown in all of the Rocky films it is this: you don't have to be the smartest person or the most famous person in the world to love someone. All you have to do is reach out to them and show them that they are good.

The impact will last a lifetime and this is best seen by the fact that Rocky never forgot the woman that showed him that he was in fact, good.

Christian Love and...Rocky? Part Five

A great story features a hero that faces a challenge that seems insurmountable before succeeding in the most amazing way. It is meant to inspire us and make us believe that we are capable of the same type of victory if we just believe that we can do all that our hero did.

However, in the real world there are consequences and the opening of Rocky 5 makes perfect sense when it seems that Rocky has some kind of physical complications after winning the biggest fight of his career. 

Rocky and Adrian: Post Fight

To make matters worse we find out that his accountant took advantage of him while he was grieving the loss of his friend, which led to him losing millions of dollars. 

Rocky Goes Broke

In most cases the spouse who was not at fault would probably pack their things and leave. During the last film we saw Adrian on multiple occasions express her concerns so she would certainly have the biggest I told you so moment of their marriage. 

However, we already know from previous films that Adrian has always seen Rocky the person so when he wants to fight again in order to save his family from financial ruin she reminds him that his physical condition is a cause of great concern. In fact, it was at this time when he had never been so down that she began with what is probably the most beautiful exchange we see between the two characters in the entire series.

Through good times and bad times until death do us part. 

Adrian lives in the here and now and by doing so she looked at the man that she loved and not the decision he made that she firmly disagreed with. He had no problem believing the sincerity of all that she said because throughout the series we have seen that it was always about the two of them being together in that bond where they always willed the good of the other while living the call of agape.

Sadly, Adrian's commitment was not enough to deter Rocky from looking for affirmation elsewhere. Perhaps he was so used to being in the spotlight or felt bad for losing his fortune. Whatever it was, we start to see a determination on his part to get it all back once they return to their old Philadelphia neighborhood.

Soon he would start training a young boxer who moved his way up the heavyweight ranks and once this young star was in a position to earn a title shot Rocky felt he was close to regaining the respect that he had as champion. The problem was that he didn't realize that he didn't need wealth or material things to prove his value to those who mattered most to him. He already had all that he needed from his family who he was now in danger of losing.

Rocky was so consumed with taking his young fighter to the top that he didn't offer his son the attention that he needed as he was entering his teen years. Adrian watched closely and patiently and dropped hints here and there to try and redirect Rocky's focus, but nothing registered until his son blows up on him out of frustration. Rocky was crushed by son's pain but still didn't fully understand why his son felt the way he did. 

Unfortunately, Rocky would have to lose even more before he was ready to hear the truth. Moments after the falling out with his son, his boxing protégé Tommy Gunn stopped by to tell him that he was going to sign with the boxing promoter that would not only offer him a lot of money but also into that dangerous business part of boxing that Rocky was trying to protect him from. Sadly, Rocky's words fall on deaf ears as the temptation of money and fame are too much for Tommy so he speeds off and leaves Rocky behind, regardless of what that he did to get him where he was right now.

Enter Adrian to once again remind him that he was more than he realized.

At the moment when Rocky confessed his inadequacies and how he is not worthy of respect, again based on the way he thinks the world sees him, Adrian reminds him that she respected him because she had lived every battle and struggle with him. She knew all that he endured because she suffered with him. She then explained that he survived those challenges because of his heart, the special gift he had that was like no one else. His heart that propelled him to victories in the ring was the same heart that loved her and their son without question.

After reminding Rocky of the gift he had already shared with others she then lays out some tough love for him. He was not looking in the right direction and by doing so he was hurting the last person he should be hurting, his son! In her words: If there is something you want to pass on pass it on to your son. For God sakes, your son is lost! He needs you!

In other words, his value didn't come from passing on his boxing knowledge to a future champion because there is no point in being a successful trainer if he neglected his duties as a husband and father. It was time for Rocky to get his priorities together and while Adrian was direct with him she still didn't threaten or manipulate him. Her cry was one of desperation and it was timed perfectly since she waited for the moment when Rocky would actually hear and understand what she had to say.

Rocky's ambition clouded his judgment and it was noble of him to want to give more to his family. Still, he needed to learn what was truly important and he was able to trust Adrian because of all of the good times and the bad times that he and Adrian had been through, as well as how she loved him through those challenges. 

You're Losing Your Family

This is one of the most intimate moments we ever see between the two of them because it is filled with love and forgiveness. Adrian certainly held a lot in but once she let it out she reached for Rocky before an apology left his lips. She knew this man like no one else. She knew that he loved her and their son and that he would do whatever he needed to do in order to take care of his family. Aside from that, she also knew that when she spoke to him that he would listen. Rocky can embrace his wife without hesitation because he knew that when she was direct with her words that it was from her concern for him as well as their family because he too knew how much she loved both him and their son. 

Later that night Rocky would have to deal with his son. After some encouragement from his wife, he finds his son and fesses up to all that he had done. Sometimes, parents and other adult figures forget that children are still people with feelings and we are capable of making mistakes, which in turn, hurt these young people. Rocky's son was able to forgive his father because of the memories of all of the love that his father had given to him previously.

Part of loving someone who has wronged us is to understand their actions. Rocky failed when he lost his fortune. He did not keep track of his finances and in doing so he lost all that he had earned. What made it hard for him was remembering his time as a young fighter when his trainer Mickey Goldmill did all that he had done to teach Rocky what he would have to do to take care of himself both in and out of the ring. While these memories of Mickey remind him of the father and son type relationship they had it also reminded Rocky how he didn't heed to all of Mickey's lessons. Regret is a tough thing to live with, especially when one's mistakes have a huge impact on those closest to them.

Interestingly enough, while this movie is the least appreciated by Rocky fans because of what it lacked in action it actually served as a beautiful reminder of what true love is within a family setting. When their surroundings changed their commitment remained. We have a clear picture of how much the Balboas mean to each other and how that love would never fade away.

Christian Love and...Rocky? Part Four

If you're looking for both the ultimate underdog story as well as a celebration of patriotism then Rocky 4 is the film for you. Of course while most people continue to focus on the action of the film we will see more challenges to Rocky and Adrian's marriage along with difficulties in other relationships. In this film Rocky almost seems to push Adrian aside in order to pursue his own interests with her once again having to let her love for him guide her decisions in the spirit of agape.

While the beginning of this blog has a somewhat ominous tone the film starts out very pleasantly.  Rocky's affection for his wife remains, as after celebrating her brother's birthday he plans a private moment to celebrate their wedding anniversary. In expressing his love for her we can see that she still see that same spark we saw between them in the first film. That's when he tells her that she still won't get rid of him as a way of reminding her that his commitment to her is the same as it was the day they got married.

Next we see the arrival of a huge Soviet boxer named Ivan Drago who was sent to the United States to take on American's best boxers (it was the 80's). After an introductory press conference where Drago is introduced to the boxing world Rocky's former rival Apollo Creed sees an opportunity to put himself back in the spotlight by taking on Drago who was greeted with the type of hype that Creed was known for (thanks to the director's cut we have new scenes to look at).

Immediately Rocky is hesitant at such an idea because Creed is much older now and Drago is bigger and stronger than either of them. Apollo responds with a ridiculous diatribe about how boxers are warriors and how they need to be in the middle of the action because that's how they were born.  Rocky can see that he is being swayed by Apollo's smooth talking ways but he is also trying to be a loyal friend who also remembers Apollo helping get his title back. 

For such people do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent.

Rocky Agrees to Help Apollo

Now we arrive at the press conference where the former champion announces that he will take on the big Russian in an exhibition bout. Creed runs his mouth in order to build the hype for the match with the Russians not being accustomed to such behavior.  Once the Russians begin to respond we see Apollo's ego get in the way (there is much to see in this side by side comparison of the theatrical and director's cut of the film). 

                           The result of humility and fear of the Lord is riches, honor and life.

Apollo and Drago Press Conference

Rocky has not been comfortable with the idea of Apollo fighting Drago and he is unafraid about expressing that concern to his best friend even when they are about to head to the ring. As usual, Apollo is his hostile self as he is not interested in losing his moment to return to glory.

This had to be a huge weight on Rocky as Adrian herself had expressed her concerns to him when Apollo came to visit them.

Overall, Rocky is trying to be a good friend during a time that is causing discomfort for all. This is something they have been through before so perhaps this drives him to remain loyal to Apollo as 

                  A friend is a friend at all times, and a brother is born for the time of adversity.

Eventually the match takes place between Apollo and Drago with Apollo being beaten to death. Even when Rocky begs him to stop the fight Creed is too proud to admit that he is over matched. There are no words to fully describe the conflict within Rocky as he tries to be loyal to his prideful friend while also doing what he can to protect him.  The worst part of this scene was that Creed's wife witnessed the whole episode because he was too proud to stop the fight.

Apollo vs. Drago: Theatrical Version

Apollo vs. Drago: Director's Cut

Apollo's funeral was devastating for those who loved him as his death was unnecessary. While his former trainer Duke Evers states the way that Apollo lived Rocky is filled with guilt because he never forgot how much Apollo did for him. His love and loyalty for his friend weighed heavily on him to the point where he can't see that Apollo not only made a bad decision even when he had multiple opportunities to change his mind.

With Apollo's warrior words echoing in Rocky's head he goes on to schedule a fight with Drago in order to avenge the death of his friend. Most people think that Rocky is foolish to do such a thing because he risks the same fate as Apollo. However, Rocky did something much worse in making his decision to take on the Russian boxer: he did so without telling Adrian! Adrian actually finds out when she arrives home one day and see members of the press waiting for her in the Balboa driveway. At that moment she has no idea what they are talking about so imagine the devastation she felt when she realized that Rocky would make such a decision without telling her first

When Rocky finally returns home she confronts him about his decision and his response sounds more like Apollo than the man that she married. Adrian expresses her concerns and fears but Rocky refuses to budge. The worst part of the scene is the look on Adrian's face when she can see that he won't change his mind. Here she is, standing at the top of the staircase in their mansion, which is a long way from the run down apartment where they first kissed and all she sees is Rocky! Regardless of all of the wealth and fame her husband now has she had always seen the man she loved and not the man who provided these luxuries. And now he was willing to risk the life that matted so much to her in order to honor his egotistical friend in the ring. 

Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Unfortunately, Apollo is no longer available to look back on his holly and use his smooth speech to talk Rocky out of avenging him for something that he should have never done.

The moment of Rocky's departure to Russia is difficult to watch. Adrian was comfortable enough to say what she had to say but she also gave him the freedom to make his decision. She didn't nag him or threaten to leave him because after all, this is the same woman who had already proven more than once that she understood the meaning of the word commitment. She was afraid of losing him and that in itself was heart breaking.

Rocky' Departure: Theatrical Release

As the film progresses the viewer is pumped up by yet another fabulous training montage where we see two warriors prepare for what the Rocky universe will call the biggest fight in boxing history. This serves actually as an amazing distraction after Rocky's departure because we see some of the most beautiful parts of God's creation, which are two male bodies at their peak performing at such a high level. After all, creation is good and that also includes the human body (Genesis 1:31).

The biggest surprise though is when Rocky returns from a run to see Adrian waiting for him. This is one of the most beautiful scenes in the series as she approaches the love of her life and lays her heart out to him: I couldn't stay away anymore. I missed you. We can assume that she is still hurt and scared but her love for Rocky is unquestioned and she would rather be with him than resent him and stay away. She also knows that she is safe to say whatever it is she has to tell him because of his unconditional love for her. That is why she is able to look him in the eye and say: I'm with you, no matter what. 

No Matter What

Imagine the impact that had on him knowing that she was with him as he prepared for the biggest match of his life. There is no doubt that having her support during his training sessions as well as during the big fight helped propel Rocky to the greatest win of his career, more so than the inspiration she gave to him when he first won the title from Apollo in the second film. 

More important than the hero in the ring is our hero Adrian demonstrating her true love for Rocky as she truly demonstrated what it means to love someone in good times and bad:

1. First, she didn't agree with Rocky's decision to fight Drago but gave him room to do what he  needed to do even though he was putting his life at risk. 
2. Second, she could have claimed that Rocky betrayed her by not speaking to her first when he decided to take the fight. She certainly had the right to know even what he was thinking of doing but again, she let that pass especially after he finally explained his reasons for taking the fight.
3. Most importantly, Adrian showed greater strength than her husband during the fight as she sat there and watched him take a horrible beating prior to summoning the strength to beat what many saw as an unbeatable opponent. Most viewers tend to focus on Rocky's amazing victory, which made his nation proud but most people fail to see all that Adrian endured.

The hardest part for Adrian was that she wasn't given the choice to prepare for what could have been a tragic outcome. Still, she was there and supported her husband because her love for him was stronger than her greatest fear.

This was indeed, a true act of agape. 

Finally, we need to look at a touching moment between Rocky and his best friend/brother in law Paulie. Sadly, we usually wait for moments when we think that we might see someone for the last time to say the deepest things in our heart but it's still nice to know the impact we had on certain people. Paulie is not the kindest person in the world but he is still a person, which means he is capable of recognizing genuine love, even if it's from a friend.

This film has so many complicated interactions because of the emotions that go with them: fear, anger, ego, etc. The best part of it, as we see in the Director's cut, is that people can change. The last part of the film, when we see a different version of Rocky's speech, shows us the possibility of being able to see a person as a real person. From the crowd cheering for Rocky, who they had booed most of the fight to Rocky greeting Drago in good sportsmanship even though he had just beaten this man out of vengeance for his fallen friend. It could be argued that it was the determination in each fighter that changed those who detested them. From the crowd having to admire Rocky's persistence against what appeared to be an unbeatable opponent to Rocky having to show that boxer's respect to Drago for being his toughest opponent. 

Everybody Can Change

We are called to conform to the will of Christ but we are not without the graces to empower us as we make the effort to change for the better. Never underestimate the power of Jesus for nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).

Christian Love and...Rocky? Part Three

As we continue the discussion of how we can recognize Christian love in the Rocky series we are now in a totally different place in the marriage of Rocky and Adrian Balboa. Rocky is now the heavyweight champion of the world so he is now successful, wealthy and famous. One would could only wonder how that would change a couple that began their life on the streets of Philadelphia but we will see that genuine love remained at the center of their new life.

In the opening montage we see a man who looks much different than the club fighter from the first film. He has numerous victories over several contenders, has used part of his fortune to make changes to his oft injured face, and is now a global icon that associates with other public figures. Surprisingly, we also see the same mannerisms and affections between the Balboas, which is usually expressed in the way he looks for her after his victories in the ring. Outside of the ring their love continues to grow as they raise their young son in a life filled with luxury and comfort.  

It doesn't seem like their lives could get any better.

Rocky 3 Opening Montage

During a public ceremony where the city of Philadelphia honors Rocky for all that he has done for the community, he is presented with a statue that draws great cheers and admiration from the crowd. He thanks the crowd and then talks to them about the possibility of retiring. That is when he is surprised by the dangerous Clubber Lang who accuses him of ducking him. That is when Rocky's manager Mickey Goldmill stands up for Rocky and tells him he won't get a title shot. What Rocky does not know is that Mickey feels this way because, as we also saw in the opening montage, he has scouted Lang and knows how dangerous he is. Things only get worse when Lang makes verbal advances towards Adrian, where Rocky defends his wife's honor, as he should.

It would not take long for Rocky to be surprised with a great truth. Lang was right with his accusation of Rocky ducking him, as Mickey had no intention of putting Rock in the ring with the dangerous challenger. He also confessed that he was careful with choosing the other contenders that he put him the ring with in order to protect him. In this case we can see that it was not just Mickey protecting the money machine as it was him caring about Rocky's well being.

Mickey was a father figure to Rocky but he had to come clean about what was going on behind the scenes. Rocky struggled with the truth and felt the need to prove himself. This was certainly a failure to see that his value as a person had nothing to do with facing and defeating Lang and, he had the right to live his life as he wished regardless of public opinion or his newfound celebrity. So, against Mickey's wishes, he takes the fight and trains in a nonchalant way as he sees it as going out in style. Right away, we can see that he was looking for fulfillment in something that would never satisfy his longing for true love. 

Rocky not only loses the fight but is demolished and humiliated by Lang. Rocky also had to realize that everything Mickey said would happen, happened. It's one thing to realize that another fighter was simply the better man but Mickey warned Rocky that Lang would be more than he would could handle because of his skill and his hunger. On top of that, Mickey had a heart attack the night of fight thanks to a pre-fight skirmish and died.

This would be very hard to recover from, especially knowing that Mickey did out of love for him. Of course, some of Mickey's last words were, I love you kid. 

One of the realities of the boxing world is that when two boxers test each other in a memorable match that a certain level of respect occurs between them. The first two films feature Rocky and now former champion Apollo Creed having two memorable bouts that are loved and remembered by both movie and boing fans. That is why Apollo comes to Rocky to speak to him about his loss to Clubber. He points out that Rocky lost the fight for all of the wrong reasons, that he doesn't want Rocky to walk away with regrets, and then offers to help him get the title back by training him. All of this comes from the fact that Apollo truly cares about Rocky and knows that he is capable of helping him regain what he lost fo the wrong reasons. 

Do not neglect to do what is good and share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind.

Apollo's Offer

While training for his rematch Rocky is still shaken up by his failure as well as the sudden loss of Mickey.  Adrian confronts Rocky about his loss of motivation to which he claims has come from him not wanting to fight anymore. Adrian sees something more than this because she had never known Rocky to be a quitter.

While arguing on the beach she challenges Rocky to be honest with her. First he admits that he feels dishonest since he wasn't the champion that he thought he was. Adrian continued to push him though as she knew that there was more than Rocky cared to admit. Eventually, he comes clean and admits that he is afraid. This is a huge step for Rocky because of the fact that he is a fighter. 

Adrian admits that  she is afraid too and that there is nothing wrong with being afraid. Rocky sees his fear as a challenge to his manhood but Adrian reminds him that fear is a big part of being human. In other words, she doesn't accuse him of being weak or worse than that, less of a man. She in fact allows him to know that he is still good in her eyes even though he allowed her to see him at one of his weakest moments. Sadly, a lot of men are not married to women who would speak to them in this way. 

She also reminds of the moment in the future where he will no longer be in the spotlight and how she doesn't want him to live with regret while. In this case, she is reminding him of what Apollo told him when he made the offer to train him but with her being Rocky's wife, she also reminded him that she was going to be there with him. This is the same woman from the last film who would not walk away from him when she feared that he could be permanently disabled. She is truly committed to him through the good and bad times and she is not afraid to challenge him to make things right. Adrian is not scolding Rocky to live up to some public persona. She is reminding him that he is the same good person that she fell in love before his celebrity life began.

Finally, Adrian tells Rocky that she and Apollo believe in him and that he should go after his title for the right reasons. Win or lose, if he simply does his best then she knows he can live with the outcome because he will have no excuses.

The most important thing about Adrian's approach is that she didn't break him down in order to hurt him. She broke through the walls he put up in order to bring back the man that she knew was still inside of him. This was a healthy argument.

Let us be reminded now of a simple but powerful quote: The purpose of marriage is to get your spouse to heaven. Another way of saying this is when one tells their beloved: you make me want to be a better person.  

All of this of course, was the easy part as there was still a huge boxing match ahead. Just like their marriage, the match featured many ups and downs with Adrian being there the entire time. When he did well she cheered for him. When he struggled she was concerned. When he was down and out she pleaded for his suffering to end, even if it meant stopping the fight; but she never left his side. Even though he had to be completely focused on his task at hand there had to be a part of him that knew that she was in the ring with him.

Eventually Rocky conquered what seemed to be an invincible opponent and regained his championship. As he was raised up by the men in his corner we see an exhausted fighter who is relieved of the burden he had been carrying. However, there is a certain peace that comes over him once he sees Adrian. This is not just from Adrian's encouragement during his preparation for this bout. We have seen her commitment through the films thus far.  

Before she embraced him she asked are you alright in which he responds never better before collapsing on her shoulder. One could only wonder if his response was because he had regained his title or because he was in the arms of his beloved Adrian.  

Who can find a woman of worth? Far beyond jewels is her value. Her husband trusts her judgment; he does not lack income. She brings him profit, not loss, all the days of her life.

Christian Love and...Rocky? Part Two

Welcome to the second part of the six part series of how the teachings of the Theology of the Body are exemplified in the Rocky Series. In the last blog we discussed how two people named Rocky and Adrian not only fell in love but did so while affirming the good in the other. In recognizing the actions of the other that affirmed the goodness in each person it also established a relationship of authentic love and trust. This will be most important as we get to the next phase of their relationship.

As the story continues into Rocky II most fans of the series tend to focus on the redemption that Rocky experienced by winning his rematch with heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. However, the one thing that is not discussed as much in the story line is the development of the relationship between Rocky and Adrian as they not only get married in this film but also have their marriage tested almost immediately.

After his big boxing match that serves as the climax of the first film Rocky is informed that he has physical damage to one of his eyes. After an extensive stay in the hospital he and Adrian begin to move forward with their lives. This begins with the beautiful scene when Rocky proposed to Adrian. There we can see how nervous he was because of the fact that she meant so much to him. Then, as she accepts his proposal it's so beautiful to see how she looks right at him and is very happy to give him the answer she knows he wants because she wants the same thing

On the night of their wedding they have a brief conversation where the two of them look at each other and with great honesty share their feelings for each other. As they begin to settle into their evening Rocky asks her if she wants him to help her remove her coat before telling her that she is the best thing to ever come into his life.  In other words, like the male lover in the biblical book Song of Songs (5:2), he doesn't force himself on her. Adrian of course responds with affection because she knows how much Rocky loves her as she can sense that he still wishes nothing but what is good for her. That's what leads her to ask him if it will always be like this with Rocky affirming that it will always be this way.

Now that Adrian feels safe she looks Rocky in the eyes and shares something she fears when she says: I hope you never get tired of me. Rocky shakes his head and responds: You ain't never getting rid of me before telling her that he would never change anything about her. Then they tell each other: I love you and share a beautiful kiss because this is another moment when they were naked and not ashamed. At this point it's almost shocking to remember that this was the same woman who couldn't even look at Rocky when he first showed interest in her.

As the couple begins their life together Rocky uses his new found celebrity to make commercials. Adrian is pleased because it means that Rocky will no longer have to risk his own safety by getting back in the ring. It is also at this time that they receive the news that they are expecting their first child. Rocky is filled with joy and said that he suspected something since Adrian woke up with a big smile that morning. Then as they walk through the park they share how they both wish for their unborn child to be like the other.

Unfortunately, their life doesn't go through as planned. Rocky has trouble reading the cue cards due to his damaged vision, which jeopardizes his ability to continue making commercials. Aside from that we see a couple that recognizes that there is something important in the way people are treated as they both stand up to an abusive director who mistreats Rocky during a very awkward moment for him. Still, that doesn't fix the problem that Rocky now faces as he must now find another way to make a living.

After a long search for employment Rocky ends up at the meat packing facility where his brother in law Paulie used to work. He works hard and is thankfully able to provide for his family. Still, Adrian worries about Rocky because he comes home very tired on a daily basis. Rocky disregards his fatigue as he continues to treat her with the same kindness that she had always known from him.

Things start to change though once Rocky gets laid off.

Now we have a man whose self-worth is challenged as he questions his ability to provide for his family. He is humiliated when his now pregnant wife offers to go back to work as he still feels the call to be the provider. Still, with all that is going through his mind and his heart he is still honest and gentle with Adrian. To make matters worse, he is not in the right frame of mind to refuse a challenge from heavyweight champion Apollo Creed who is still fuming over the fact that Rocky more than held his own in their last match.

As Creed baits Rocky into a rematch Rocky tells Adrian that he feels like a nobody again as those around him now refer to him as a coward since he won't respond to Creed's challenge. She reassures him that he is not a nobody in her eyes and that they will be fine. She also expresses her wish for him not to fight again because she doesn't want to see him get hurt. This is one of the hardest scenes to watch in the series because Adrian is pregnant and looks at Rocky with great fear in her eyes. One can easily see that he is the most important thing in her life because he was the one who loved her for who she really was.

Adrian is devastated.

Rocky begins to train but is immediately distracted by his marital problems. Interestingly enough there is never any discussion about the two of them separating over what we can see is a very serious disagreement. Adrian is worried about Rocky's well being, which again shows her commitment to her husband because she is still with him even though she doesn't approve of what he is doing...and she is going through this while she is pregnant with their first child!

Her true feelings come out when her brother Paulie decides to scold her for not approving of Rocky's decision to fight again. This time though we see a different woman than we saw in the past. Instead of taking Paulie's nonsense she speaks directly to him as she explains her position. Then Paulie tries to blame her for the possibility of Rocky getting hurt, which in this case could cost him his eyesight. Adrian reacts with great emotion as the thought scares her tremendously. Amazingly, she says something so beautiful in the midst of her struggle: If he goes blind Paulie, you walk away: I can't. I love him, you don't! 

Adrian Balboa, the woman who could barely speak to Rocky in this same pet store at the beginning of the first film is now a woman who will not only stand up for her husband but also stand by him, no matter what! In other words, she understands the meaning of the word commitment.

Unfortunately, Adrian's concern for Rocky's well being would not be the end to her suffering. Adrian goes into labor prematurely and loses a lot of blood during the delivery of their son. This causes her to slip into a coma. Rocky is devastated and can't do anything but stay by her side. When he's not at her bed side he is in the chapel praying for Adrian. (see the film War Room for a great discussion on why we should be praying for our spouses). He is so concerned for her well being that won't even see his newborn son until he can see him with Adrian.

When Adrian comes out of her coma the first person she sees is Rocky. She sees that same smile that she fell in love with because that smile only comes for him when he sees her! This scene is one of many where we can see their true exchange of mutual love. Then we see them both react as they see their son for the first time. They are amazed at the sight of their newborn baby and all Adrian can do is thank Rocky. Rocky is so happy to see Adrian recover and once he finally sees his son in his mother's arms he offers to drop out of the fight. For some reason this leads Adrian to have a change of heart as she tells Rocky that she wants him to WIN!!!. It was never said during the film why she changed her mind but one would guess that her giving spirit, even at a moment when she still had a good reason to fear for his well being, knew that this was something that meant so much to Rocky. Again, Adrian knows the meaning of agape and by accepting her request it's almost as if Rocky's eyes make her a promise to do as she wishes because after all, no one's support would mean more to him than hers?

The fight of course is a war as both men are determined to win. Rocky barely squeaks by with a surprising knock out victory and as he has his moment of glory he says that this is the second greatest moment of his life (his son's birth being the first). But the last thing he says, which is the most beautiful, is when he raises the belt and says, I just got one thing to say...to my wife at home. Yo Adrian, I did it!

Rocky remembers his promise to Adrian and is not afraid to express this in front of the entire world. This is yet another example of being naked and not ashamed (Genesis 2:25). 

Imagine how that made the shy girl from Philly feel. 

There are many who claim that they love the underdog theme in the Rocky movies and while that is true one cannot ignore the fact that Rocky is in many cases, the many that many of us wish we could be. Sylvester Stallone himself has said that Rocky is the man he wishes he could be and that is also why he loved playing the character.
